Intern Spotlight: Breana Trejo-Quibelan

Our next spotlight is on The Leadership Center’s very own summer intern, Breana Trejo-Quibelan. Originally from San Jose, CA, Breana is a George Fox University Junior majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Biblical Studies. This week, we were able to catch up with Breana to find out how her internship is going!

Q: How did you first learn of The Leadership Center?
A: I was invited to a ministry-bound women’s luncheon at Fox by Professor Mary Schmitt, and that’s where I first met Trisha Welstad. Trisha and I got to talking, and I let it slip that I would love to serve the Church through my graphic design major, and she let it slip that she knows of a lot of churches in the area that I could serve at. One thing led to another, and Trisha offered me an internship at The Leadership Center!
Q: What has been one highlight of your internship so far?
A: Man, there has been too many to count! If I had to choose though, I guess a highlight has been when I was able to sit in on a professional Graphic Designer’s client meeting going over logo ideas. It was so cool to see her process of presenting possible logos to a client, as well as being able to talk design with her! There was definitely a moment when I was listening in and observing her meeting that I thought to myself, ‘I want to do this.’

Q: What has been one difficulty?
A: When I first began, it was hard getting into the swing of things i.e. finding an “office” to work from (GFU’s Bruin Den has been a favorite spot), and trying to figure out how to set up TLC’s weekly email newsletters (like this). What has been most difficult though has been internal. As a perfectionist, it has always been difficult for me not to procrastinate in fear of not bringing something perfect to the table at all times. This internship has definitely given me plenty of opportunities to push past this fear of mine in order to get work done!
Q: What is your dream job after graduation?
A: I would love to be the main in-house designer at a non-profit or church. When it comes to a dream job, being able to serve God through it is a must. The fact that there is a possibility of serving God while creating art at the same time would just be the cherry on top.

Q: How has being mentored impacted you?
A: Being mentored by Trisha has been awesome. She really has a gift of encouraging others, and she is so passionate about what she does that it’s hard for it not to rub off on the people she comes into contact with (like me)!

Q: What has God been teaching you during this internship?
A: That it’s okay not to be the best, especially when you first start something. I have a very performance driven personality, and I’ve always thought that you have to be at the top of your game at all times. I’ve only been through one year of design school, and somehow I think that I must be failing and not good enough just because I haven’t conquered Illustrator yet! That mindset is crazy, and yet that is where my mind keeps going to. Luckily, I have a Father who speaks Truth when I need it most. He’s been helping me to focus on how I can best serve those around me through design, instead of on how I can get ahead of everyone around me through design. It has been a humbling experience to say the least.

Q: What will your Legacy Project be?
A: I’m not 100% sure to be honest, but I am working on logo ideas for Northside Community Church’s youth group. My main prayer in designing a logo for them is that they will be able to use it for years to come.

Please be praying for Breana this summer as she continues to serve us here at The Leadership Center!
